Sculptra®

Collagen renewal that unfolds gradually

Sculptra® — collagen renewal that unfolds gradually
LIVO clinic treatment room

Sculptra® is a collagen-stimulating injectable made with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). At LIVO, we use this biostimulatory treatment for gradual renewal—allowing facial support and skin quality to develop over time rather than creating a sudden change.

When the face begins to lose support

Facial aging is not a single process. The skin becomes thinner, collagen production slows, fat compartments change, retaining ligaments lose support, and the facial skeleton gradually remodels. These changes unfold differently in every face.

Collagen is one part of this larger system. It gives the skin and connective tissues strength and resilience. As collagen declines, the skin may feel less firm, transitions between facial regions become more visible, and the face may gradually lose support.

Sculptra® is designed for gradual collagen renewal. Its role is to improve support and skin quality within carefully selected areas, creating a softer, more progressive change rather than an immediate, sharply defined alteration.

How Sculptra® works

Sculptra® contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic, biocompatible, and biodegradable material. Before injection, it is reconstituted with sterile water.

Once placed in the appropriate tissue layer, PLLA encourages fibroblasts to build new collagen. The reconstitution fluid is absorbed first; the collagen-related change develops over the weeks and months that follow.

The PLLA particles are gradually broken down by the body. The lasting improvement comes from the new support your own tissue develops around them.

Reconstituted PLLA → fibroblast response → new collagen → gradual structural improvement

Sculptra® compared with dermal fillers

Neither approach is inherently better. During your LIVO consultation, we will consider your facial structure, the type of change you want, how quickly you would like to see it, and whether your goal calls for broad renewal or precise contouring.

When Sculptra® may be worth considering

Sculptra® may be worth considering when you are noticing a gradual change in overall facial support or skin quality rather than one isolated line. This may include:

  • Diffuse facial volume loss
  • Reduced firmness or early laxity
  • Hollowing in selected facial regions
  • Softening of facial transitions and jawline definition
  • A preference for subtle, progressive change
  • A desire to address the face more globally rather than enlarging one feature

Areas we may consider

At LIVO, we assess the face as a whole to understand where collagen loss and structural change are most visible.

Depending on your anatomy and goals, areas we may discuss include the cheeks, smile-line region, marionette region,n, temples, preauricular area, and lower-face support.

Planning for the face as a whole

Your consultation begins with how your face has changed over time. We will assess proportions, skin thickness, tissue support, volume distribution, movement, natural asymmetry, and previous aesthetic treatments.

Sculptra® is usually planned by region and by treatment course rather than by chasing individual lines. We will adjust the amount and number of sessions according to your anatomy and the way your result develops after each visit.

For some clients, Sculptra® is enough on its own. Others may benefit from a plan that also includes wrinkle relaxers, hyaluronic acid fillers, skin resurfacing, energy-based treatments, or medical skincare.

What the appointment is like

Your provider may use a needle or blunt-tip cannula, depending on the area and technique. A Sculptra® appointment commonly takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

Because the product is reconstituted with fluid, the treated area may look fuller immediately afterward. Much of this early fullness is temporary and usually settles as the water is absorbed. The collagen-related change appears later.

A Sculptra® plan often involves more than one appointment, usually spaced several weeks apart. At LIVO, we build the result gradually and review the developing change before deciding on the next step.

Appointment → temporary fluid-related fullness → fullness settles → collagen develops → progressive result

Preparing for your appointment

Before your visit, tell us about your health history, allergies, previous injections, current medicines and supplements, recent dental work, and any active skin concerns. This helps our provider tailor the plan to you.

To help minimize bruising, avoid excessive alcohol for about 24 hours beforehand. Do not stop prescribed medicine, including blood thinners, unless your prescribing provider advises you to do so.

Standardized photographs are commonly taken to document baseline structure.

After your appointment: what to expect

Temporary swelling, tenderness, redness, bruising, or small areas of firmness can occur after injection and usually settle. We will explain what is expected and remain available if you have any questions during the settling period.

Your provider may recommend a specific massage routine to help distribute the product evenly. Follow the personalized instructions you receive from LIVO.

Most daily activities can be resumed promptly. Strenuous exercise, saunas, and prolonged heat exposure are commonly postponed until the following day.

Frequently asked questions

When will I see a result?

The temporary fullness seen immediately after injection is not the final result. Early collagen-related change may become noticeable over several (4-6) weeks, with further improvement developing over the following months.

How many sessions will I need?

Sculptra® is usually planned as a series. The number of appointments and vials depends on your anatomy, degree of collagen loss, goals, and how your face responds between visits.

How long can the improvement last?

Clinical studies have followed facial results for up to two years. Your own duration will vary, and we can discuss maintenance as your face continues to change naturally.

Will I look overfilled?

The fullness seen on the day is largely related to the reconstitution fluid and usually settles within days. By planning gradually and reviewing each stage, we aim for a result that feels subtle, balanced, and never rushed.

How is Sculptra® different from a dissolvable filler?

Sculptra® is a collagen-stimulating treatment rather than a hyaluronic acid gel, so it is not designed to be dissolved. At LIVO, we work conservatively, build the result in stages, and review your progress before each next step.

Can Sculptra® be combined with other services?

Book a Sculptra® consultation at LIVO in Lisle, serving Naperville, Oak Brook, and the western Chicago suburbs. We will assess where collagen and support have changed, then design a gradual treatment course around your face and timeline.
