01Brighten & Even Skin Tone
A clearer, more balanced complexion begins with understanding the pigment

Brighten & Even Skin Tone
A clearer, more balanced complexion begins with understanding the pigment
Uneven tone can appear as scattered sun spots, post-breakout marks, diffuse dullness or larger patches of pigment. Although these changes may look similar from a distance, they do not form in the same way—and they should not all be treated with the same intensity.
- Freckles or sun spots that have become more visible
- Brown or gray-brown patches
- Marks that remain after a blemish
- A complexion that looks uneven or dull
- Red and brown tones appearing together
Why skin tone becomes uneven
Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color. Ultraviolet exposure, visible light, inflammation, hormones and individual skin biology can all influence how much pigment is produced and where it settles. Redness from visible vessels or recent inflammation is different from brown pigment, even when both affect the overall tone.
Different kinds of discoloration need different plans
A discrete sun spot may respond differently from melasma or a post-acne mark. Some pigment sits closer to the surface; some is deeper or easily reactivated. Treating without recognizing that difference can create little improvement or make the complexion less even.
How LIVO assesses tone
We look at the color, pattern, depth and distribution of the concern, along with skin tone, tanning history, sensitivity and previous treatments. We also separate pigment from redness so each element has a clear place in the plan.
- Stellar M22™ IPL — selected wavelengths can address appropriate brown pigment and visible redness after careful skin-tone and pigment assessment.
- Microneedling — may support gradual renewal where uneven tone occurs alongside textural change.
- HydraFacial® or LIVO Signature Facials — cleansing, exfoliation and hydration can improve surface clarity and radiance.
- PDRN or exosome-based care — may be considered for overall skin quality within a product- and protocol-specific plan.
Daily skincare and sun protection
Morning — cleanse gently, apply vitamin C or niacinamide if tolerated, moisturize, then use a generous layer of SPF 30 or higher. A tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides may be useful when visible light contributes to pigmentation.
Evening — cleanse, then choose one tone-supporting active such as a retinoid, azelaic acid, kojic acid or a gentle exfoliating acid. Begin slowly rather than layering several brightening products at once. If you are currently using any retinoid-based or acid-related skincare products, please let us know before your appointment. We will assess your skin condition and provide appropriate recommendations accordingly.
Ingredients worth looking for — vitamin C, niacinamide, azelaic acid, kojic acid, retinoids and carefully used alpha-hydroxy acids. Hydroquinone belongs in a time-limited, professionally guided plan.
Consistency matters more than intensity. Irritation can make uneven tone look worse, particularly in skin prone to post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Patch-test new products and introduce one active ingredient at a time. Apply sunscreen generously about 15 minutes before sun exposure; when outdoors, reapply at least every two hours and sooner after swimming, sweating or towel drying.
Will one treatment remove every dark spot?
Usually not. The number and pace of treatments depend on pigment type, depth and response.
Can IPL treat every type of pigmentation?
No. Some patterns, including melasma-prone pigmentation, require particular caution in person consultation.
Why is sunscreen part of a brightening plan?
New ultraviolet exposure can deepen pigment and reactivate areas that have improved.
A brighter complexion, approached with restraint
LIVO begins by identifying what creates the uneven tone, then builds a plan that supports clarity without repeatedly provoking the skin.
